Wind pioneer invests in battery storage

In the forests outside Gränna, overlooking lake Vättern, sits a 4.8 MW battery storage optimized by Qurrent. The site has produced wind power since 2010, and when the battery market took off, adding a battery of its own was a natural next step.

From wind power to battery storage

Tuggbatt, run by its owner Peter Karlsson, has always been an early mover when it comes to energy. The decision to build wind power was taken back in 2010, and when the market began talking about batteries the next step was close at hand. Because the wind power was already in place and there was spare capacity on the grid, it was only natural to build the battery storage right here.

The 4.8 MW battery has been in operation for almost a year. Today it runs as a stand-alone battery storage, but it can be linked to the wind power when that is more profitable, and the site also has room to build a solar park in the future.

Choosing Qurrent

Peter Karlsson knows wind power inside out, but batteries were an entirely new field. The battery market is also in constant flux, with new ancillary services continually added and conditions shifting quickly. That is exactly why the choice of partner became decisive. Peter wanted a player that truly knows the market and can help navigate it.

Ahead of choosing an aggregator, a lot of time went into thorough research, talking to several different players and weighing them against each other. After a careful evaluation the choice fell on Qurrent, a decision Peter is very happy with today.

We've been up and running for almost a year and the business case holds, so it feels really good. I dug deep into batteries and into which players to work with, and we chose Qurrent. They've been excellent, and are definitely a partner I recommend.

Over the last twelve months the battery has contributed 28,341 MWh of sold capacity to the ancillary service markets. A site built next to existing wind power thereby creates entirely new revenue and maximizes the value of the location.
