The energy collaboration at Hylte Paper
How a century-old paper mill, a 42 MW battery park, and a four-way partnership are strengthening the Nordic grid.

In the forests of the Swedish province of Halland, a company called Hylte Paper has been manufacturing paper for over a hundred years. It is one of Sweden's most well-known paper mills, and last year marked the beginning of a new chapter in its long company history.
The decision to install one of Sweden's largest battery installations directly on the mill site was taken in 2024. Today, the large-scale battery park of 42 MW is already in place, and actively supporting the regional grid. The deployment of this park is the result of a successful collaboration between Hylte Paper as asset owner, Bixia AB as balance responsible party (BRP), Qurrent as independent optimizer, and Soltech Energy Solutions as installer.
The large-scale battery installation has been designed both to stabilize the mill's own energy costs and to contribute to grid balancing in the region. In other words: an asset that benefits not just one company, but the entire electricity system. This is further proof of how Hylte Paper is a company that genuinely has embraced operational flexibility.
Partners with a shared vision

Qurrent is the sole optimizer of Hylte Paper's battery park, responsible for real-time dispatch, market participation, and maximizing the value of the installation across Swedish ancillary service markets. This means continuous capacity allocation across multiple markets simultaneously, with ongoing adjustments as grid conditions and prices shift.
Bixia acts as BRP and carries financial responsibility for the installation's role in the balancing market, bringing deep expertise in energy trading and balance responsibility.
We are proud to be part of the collaboration that has made one of Sweden's largest battery parks possible. By using resources already present in the industry, this project creates new flexibility in the electricity system, contributes to greater stability in SE4, and keeps energy costs down for production. This clearly shows how industry and the energy sector can work together to accelerate the energy transition, in a cost-effective and sustainable way.
The bigger picture
The energy transition is often discussed in terms of gigawatts and policy targets. But the transition has to be built, project by project, and it happens precisely through this kind of collaboration. It requires an industrial operator willing to rethink its role in the energy system, a BRP that sees grid flexibility as its core mission, and a technology partner that connects assets to the market. And that's where Qurrent comes in.
We are proud to be Hylte Paper's optimization partner and grateful for the trust that both Hylte Paper and Bixia place in Qurrent's platform.
