From individual plants to solar clusters

How three large solar parks turned Hultsfred into a real solar cluster, and why coordinated optimization is what turns concentrated capacity into system value.

From individual plants to solar clusters

Hultsfred, a municipality in Småland, has become one of the most compelling examples of what the future of Swedish solar will look like. Three large solar parks now operate or are under development in the same local grid area: a 100 MW park developed and owned by Neoen and Alight, a 92 MW park being built by Nordic Solar A/S, and an 11.5 MW park with co-located battery storage developed by ETC El.

Together, the three solar parks have made Hultsfreds kommun a real solar cluster.

From production to participation

When large volumes of solar generation concentrate in a single grid area, new challenges and new opportunities emerge simultaneously. Curtailment risk increases. Negative price events become more frequent. The need for smarter coordination between asset owners, balance responsible parties, grid operators, and optimizers grows significantly.

At the same time, the potential multiplies. A coordinated cluster can do far more than a collection of isolated parks: better production forecasting, optimized bidding across multiple markets, active management during negative price periods, and participation in ancillary service markets such as FCR, mFRR, and FFR.

The difference between these scenarios comes down to intelligence built on top of capacity.

That's where Qurrent comes in.

Qurrent as the sole optimizer across all three parks

Qurrent is the sole optimization platform across all three Hultsfred parks. This position reflects a deliberate approach to what optimization at cluster level can look like in practice: coordinated dispatch, shared market visibility, and the ability to treat a geographically concentrated group of assets as a more coherent and flexible system resource.

For each park, Qurrent handles production forecasting, market bidding, curtailment management, and real-time optimization across electricity and ancillary service markets. For the cluster as a whole, the opportunity is to coordinate behavior across assets in a way that increases value for owners and reduces strain on the local grid.

What the municipality sees

We asked Hultsfred's sustainability strategist Arvid Lindblad and municipal council chair Mikael Karlsson how they view the cluster's significance.

Arvid Lindblad describes Hultsfred as a strong national example of how the energy system can evolve, noting that the cluster's mix of business models creates a solid foundation for both local and regional electrification. “Solar and its associated components will only keep developing,” he says, “so the timing of these first operational steps is well chosen.”

Mikael Karlsson emphasizes the solar cluster's function of supporting energy-intensive businesses and existing companies pursuing their own energy transition, and creates indirect opportunities across operations, monitoring, battery technology, and energy communities. “The end goal is not a solar cluster,” he notes, “but a future-efficient and clean ecosystem to live and work in.”

The pattern being set

Across Sweden, solar development is increasingly concentrated in specific grid areas where land, grid capacity, and permitting conditions align. The operational and commercial questions Hultsfred raises today will apply to a growing number of locations over the next five years.

As clusters form, the role of the optimizer becomes structurally more important. The value of renewable generation does not come from capacity alone, but from how that capacity is managed, coordinated, and connected to the markets that need it.

For us at Qurrent, Hultsfred is a clear demonstration of the possibilities that are created when intelligence is built directly into a new generation of solar infrastructure.

Energy Loop have published an article on the Hultsfred case, highlighting Qurrent's role in the production cluster.
